⚔️ 3-Bet & Flat-Call Guide

Knowing when to 3-bet (re-raise), when to flat-call, and when to fold is what separates winners from the Tim Rayners of the world. This guide breaks down the decision-making process that'll have you confidently clicking raise instead of nervously calling "just to see a flop."

🔑 What is a 3-Bet?

The sequence: Blinds (1st bet) → Initial Raise (2nd bet) → Re-raise (3rd bet)

A 3-bet is when you re-raise an initial raiser. It's called a 3-bet because it's the third betting action (blinds count as the first bet).

Why 3-Bet? The Power of Aggression

3-betting isn't just about having good cards - it's about taking control of the hand. When you 3-bet, you:

  • Build bigger pots with strong hands: More money in when you're likely ahead
  • Isolate weak players: Force out other players and play heads-up in position
  • Win pots pre-flop: Sometimes everyone just folds and you win immediately
  • Define ranges: Your opponents know you have a strong hand (or at least you're representing one)
  • Take initiative: You're the aggressor, which gives you more ways to win post-flop

The 3-Bet Decision Matrix

Your decision depends on three key factors: your hand strength, opponent's position, and your position relative to them.

Your Hand vs Early Position vs Middle Position vs Late Position vs Blinds
AA-QQ, AK 3-BET 3-BET 3-BET 3-BET
JJ-TT, AQ Call/3-Bet 3-BET 3-BET 3-BET
99-77, AJs, KQs Fold/Call Call 3-Bet/Call 3-BET
66-22, Suited Connectors FOLD Call (in position) Call Call
AJo, KQo, Weaker FOLD Fold Call/Fold Call (BB)

💰 3-Bet Sizing Guide

  • In Position: 3× the original raise
  • Out of Position: 3.5-4× the original raise
  • With Callers: Add 1× for each caller
  • From the Blinds: 4× minimum (you'll be OOP post-flop)

Example: Button raises to €6, you're in SB with AK. 3-bet to €24 (4× because you're OOP).

Value 3-Betting vs Bluff 3-Betting

Value 3-Bets (70% of your 3-bets at low stakes)

These are hands you're happy to get all-in with pre-flop or play big pots post-flop:

  • Premium pairs (AA-JJ)
  • Premium broadways (AK, AQ)
  • Strong suited hands in position (AJs, KQs)

Bluff 3-Bets (30% at low stakes)

Hands with blockers or good playability:

  • Small suited aces (A5s-A2s) - blocks AA, AK
  • Suited connectors in position (87s, 76s)
  • Suited one-gappers (J9s, T8s)

⚠️ Low Stakes Reality Check

At low stakes, lean heavily toward value 3-betting. Your opponents call too much and don't fold to aggression. Save the fancy bluff 3-bets for when you're playing against thinking players, not Bill after his 8th beer.

When to Flat-Call Instead

Sometimes calling is better than 3-betting:

Good Spots to Flat-Call:

  • With medium pairs (99-66) in position: Set-mining opportunities
  • Against tight early position raises: Their range is so strong that 3-betting achieves little
  • With suited connectors in position: Great implied odds if you hit
  • When there's a maniac behind: Let them 3-bet and you can 4-bet with premiums
  • To balance your range: Can't always 3-bet or fold

Real Thursday Night Scenarios

Scenario 1: Jan Opens from UTG

Setup: Jan raises to €6 from UTG. You're on the button with JJ.

CALL

Why: Jan's UTG range is incredibly tight (probably QQ+, AK). Your jacks are behind most of his range. Calling keeps his weaker hands in and lets you set-mine.

Scenario 2: Seb Raises from CO

Setup: Seb raises to €6 from cutoff. You're on the button with AJs.

3-BET to €18

Why: Seb's CO range is wide. AJs is ahead of most of it and plays well post-flop in position. This is a clear value 3-bet.

Scenario 3: Bill's Late Night Special

Setup: It's 11 PM. Bill raises to €10 from the button (he's been raising 50% of hands). You're in the BB with KQo.

3-BET to €35

Why: Bill's range is incredibly wide at this hour. KQo is crushing his range. Size up because he's calling light.

Scenario 4: The Squeeze Play

Setup: MP raises to €6, Tim calls from CO, Peter calls from button. You're in SB with 99.

FOLD

Why: Too many players, you're out of position, and 99 doesn't play well multiway. This isn't the spot to get fancy.

Common 3-Betting Mistakes

❌ 3-Betting Too Small

If you 3-bet to only 2× the raise, you're giving great odds to call. Size up, especially out of position.

❌ Not 3-Betting Premium Hands

Slow-playing AA is usually a mistake. Build the pot when you have the goods.

❌ 3-Betting Without a Plan

Know what you'll do if they 4-bet. Know what boards you'll c-bet. Have a plan.

🎯 The Golden Rule of 3-Betting

At low stakes, 3-bet for value way more than as a bluff. Your opponents call too much and don't fold to aggression. Exploit this by 3-betting your strong hands and printing money when they call with dominated holdings.
